Participating in the Cetacean Research Survey

There are Cetacean Research Surveys running from July to September 2008. Please read the Silurian Survey page carefully before considering applying for this project.

Be aware that this is a scientific marine survey not a whale watching trip. If you are interested in trips to look for whales, or if you would like to charter a boat read our Go Whale Watching for more information.

Your role an board

Participants will act as observers and to collect data during visual surveys for cetaceans. You will also conduct acoustic monitoring, enter data and assist with the deployment of hydrophones and other project equipment. Participants will also assist with the day-to-day running of the research vessel, including cooking and cleaning. The platform for this survey will be our 53ft fully equipped sailing vessel Silurian.

Being involved in the running of the research vessel is an important aspect in projects like this. The project provides an ideal opportunity to learn these skills and the HWDT Skipper is certified with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) certified instructor. Although no certificates will be awarded, interested participants should at least reach a level equivalent to RYA Competent Crew.

All on board will receive full training for all scientific survey work. 

Scientific Survey of the Hebridean Waters

No specific skills are required for this project, however as the work is scientific you must be proficient in the English language, and have basic computing skills. A pair of good eyes and sea legs will also help.   We aim to survey all sites to ensure unbiased coverage of the survey area, as cetaceans are not evenly distributed throughout. This means that encountering cetaceans is unpredictable.   Data on cetacean absence are as important as data on cetacean presence. Patience is a necessity.

Project duration and cost:

The cost of the project includes all food, accommodation, all training and specialist equipment costs for the duration of the project.

Applications are accepted right up until the time of sailing but are processed on a first-come first-served basis.Therefore early applications are favoured, although some last minute places can become available so it is always worth enquiring.
