Volunteering in the Visitor Centre and Shop

Please read the pages describing the importance of our visitor centre first.

Your role as a volunteer

Helping us to run the visitor centre and shop.

This involves answering visitors’ questions and showing them around if required. We don’t expect you to be experts in Hebridean marine life, but hopefully within a week or so you'll surprise yourself with how much you've picked up. During the summer we try to open 7 days a week, so volunteers would need to be rather flexible with their hours. Working in the centre is fun and rewarding, not least really helpful for the HWDT staff.

Assisting with public talks, open days and local events.

You may be asked to help our staff with these events to act as an extra pair of hands setting up and taking down equipment. We attend a number of events where volunteers could be asked to man information and merchandise stalls alongside staff.

Keeping it all running smoothly.

Administration, fundraising, computing and marketing skills are in great demand. Anyone with these skills is encouraged to join us and use their talents to help out our marine conservation charity.

Required skills

  • Be resourceful and able to use your initiative
  • Have good communication skills and willingness to deal with members of the public
  • Be willing to muck in and assist with any task required
  • Have at least basic computer/admin skills
  • Enjoy working in a team

Project duration and cost

We ask for a minimum of six weeks commitment from any volunteer wishing to join us in the visitor centre. There is no cost for the project, however the volunteer must finance their own accomodation and transport.

Local volunteers

The Trust is a great place for locals to come and learn about the marine environment by volunteering themselves. Local volunteers usually come for a day or two a week, and help out with the same tasks as visiting volunteers outlined above.

When to apply

The trust requires volunteers in the visitor centre year round, with a greater number in the summer months: from June-September. Please enquire about positions at any time.
