On board Silurian

Crew of the SilurianSilurian is HWDTs research and education vessel.

Most weeks April through October she is either monitoring the waters of the west coast of Scotland for whales, dolphins, and porpoises, or serving as a floating classroom for one of the many Argyll island primary and secondary schools.

Read the log below to find out what Silurian and her crew have been up to each week and all about the whales, dolphins and porpoises they spot!  To find out about the latest marine life sightings spotted elsewhere, click here.

Thursday 14th June, 2007

Date: Thursday 14th June, 2007

Anchorage: Tobermory

Position: 56° 37’.220N 006° 03’.700W

Distance Travelled: 32 NM

The final day of the trip, and a passage through sometimes lumpy seas (but in brilliant sunshine, of course) from Loch Moidart, past Ardnamurchan Point, to the Cairns of Coll and finally down the Sound of Mull to Tobermory, and the end of our epic journey. We have travelled over 400 nautical miles to islands most folk never get to go to, seeing sights only seen by the very lucky, in weather not often seen in Scotland, and, most importantly, in marvellous company. Over the course of the trip we’ve seen a total of:

Harbour porpoise: 33

Grey seal: 71

Common dolphin: >200

Basking shark: 7

Risso’s dolphin: 3

White-beaked dolphin: 11

Minke whale: 12

Bottlenose dolphin: 7

Land Rovers: 3

Thanks very much to our extremely hard-working hawk-eyed volunteers. It’s been great having you aboard. We’re off for a curry now to celebrate a really great trip.

Susie, Science Officer.
