Research
One
of the core aims of the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is to find
out more about the cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoise) that inhabit
Hebridean waters through different research techniques.
By knowing more about the distribution, behaviour and lifecycle of these animals it enables us to make more informed and wiser decisions about the conservation and management of these populations.
HWDT
undertakes a wide range of research activities focusing largely on the
common species such as harbour porpoise, minke whale, bottlenose dolphin
and basking sharks. We utilise many survey platforms including HWDT’s
research vessel, Silurian, RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats), ferries and
also land based sites.

- Cetacean Research and Educaton
- HWDT undertakes a range of projects to monitor cetaceans through
out the Hebrides. Here find details of surveys conducted from Silurian
- Sightings - Find out more about HWDT’s Community Marine Life Sightings Program, and how you can get involved
- Minke Whale Projects - HWDT is involved in two projects focused specifically on the Minke Whale, the smallest and most commonly sighted baleen whale in the Hebrides. One is HWDT’s Minke whale Photo Identification Project and the second is HWDT’s Ardnamurchan land based project.
- Project Dolphin - Over the last three years HWDT has focused studies on the Bottlenose dolphins found on the west coast of Scotland.
- Basking Shark Project - Find out how HWDT are working to ensure the conservation of the UK population of basking shark.
- Scientific Papers and Reports
- Here you will find a listing of all HWDT publications and an overview
of previous project work.
