Stranding's
of whales, dolphins or porpoises
Knowing
what to do if you find a standed cetacean on a beach could save
it's life.
A
'stranded' animal is one that is in trouble washed up on the beach
or shore above the water.
Read
this through so you can help a whale, dolphin or porpoise in trouble!
If
you find a live stranded or injured whale, dolphin
or porpoise, firstly don't panic!
Make
a phone call for help to either the:
RSPCA
- 0870 5555 999
SSPCA
(in Scotland) - 0131 3390111
or
British Divers for Marine Life Rescue - 01825 765546
You
will need to describe accurately where the animal is located.
While
you wait for help these are important things to do:
Avoid touching the animal.
Do not try to move the animal.
Keep the animal cool and wet by pouring sea water on it. Be careful
not to get water in it's blowhole. You could even put a damp blanket
on the animal - but again remember not to cover it's blowhole.
Keep people and dog's away to reduce stress to the animal. And
avoid sudden movements and loud noises.

If
you find a dead whale, dolphin or porpoise call

National
Museum in Scotland 01232 383000
or
The Natural History Museum, London 01825 765546
