A
melon is not just a fruit, but
part of the head of some toothed cetaceans
like
dolphins. It is the rounded front part of their head just forward
of their
eyes.
Inside this part of the head is a fatty, oil filled sack that
marine
biologists
agree serves as an 'acoustic lens'. This means that the melon
acts
like
a lens and focuses sound into a narrow beam so that the dolphin
can
hear
extremely well.
