Whale and dolphin body parts

Aims:

•  to develop understanding about the unique body parts of whales and dolphins
•  to know and use the correct terminology for these body parts
•  to use literacy and thinking skills to complete this work

Before using this activity the cards need to be cut up so that there is a set of body part names

(pdf) and a set of body part descriptions (pdf) for each group.

Activity:

  1. In groups children should read all the cards
  2. The cards should be matched, so that each body part name goes with a description
  3. An extension could be to sort each body part into 3 groups - belonging to a whale, belonging to a dolphin or belonging to both
  4. A possible follow up could be to draw and label the parts on sketches of whales or

                   dolphins
