Visitor Centre and Shop

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust’s main office is situated right on the harbour front in Tobermory, on the Isle of Mull. This fishing port with its multi-coloured houses sits within a well-sheltered natural harbour in the north west of the island, facing towards the Sound of Mull and Ardnamurchan peninsular.

Mull is one of the most popular islands for visitors to the Hebrides and is easily reached either by ferry from Oban or across the shorter ferry route from the Ardnamurchan peninsular. Both routes are equally scenic and travelers should look out for dolphins, porpoises and, in summer, the occasional minke whale on the trip across.

One of the Trust's main aims is to raise awareness of

whales, dolphins and porpoises in the Hebrides and the various threats they may face, through research, education and communication.  To this end our main office is also

home to our visitor centre and shop where visitors can drop

in and find out more about our marine environment in a friendly and entertaining way.

Staffed by volunteers, the centre provides acess to computer systems where sightings can be recorded and which have educational games for children.  The centre also houses interactive displays such as whale and dolphin skeletons, whale teeth and baleen and identification charts for cetaceans and other local life.  There is a reference library which is available for use by the public.  Please click here to find out more about volunteering in our visitor centre and shop.

The shop also sells crafts and cards as well as the usual popular selection of seaside memorabilia.  Most of the goods are based on the theme of whales and dolphins but there are also plenty of fluffy puffins and furry seals!  An exellent selection of books and guides to the islands and their wildlife are on sale as well as many more detailed books about cetaceans and marine mammals.  In particular there is a wide variety of children's books based on a marine theme.
