Job Description - Marketing Officer

Background

 

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is a research and education charity established in 1994 and based in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

Its main funding, currently, is from the Heritage Lottery Fund with support from SNH, AIE, WWF and a number of others. There are currently 11 staff and a vacancy has now become available for a part time Marketing Officer.

 

Job Description – Marketing Officer

The Marketing Officer will carry out general marketing and publicity duties. They will raise the profile of HWDT’s activities through a variety of methods. They will market HWDT’s boat-based monitoring trips and marine courses through advertising and generating editorial coverage. They will also raise awareness of Membership and Sponsorship Schemes. This will involve looking at creative, affordable ways to promote membership, sponsorship and name-a-whale schemes and will include sales and marketing activities.

 

Key Duties 

  • Working with Project Director to develop marketing strategies
  • Raise awareness of Trust activities through press and publicity activities including regular articles to local, regional and national    press.
  • Press Activities:- Handling and encouraging media enquiries; updating media mailing list; collating press coverage
  • Marketing monitoring trips and courses through advertising, mailshots, promotions and editorial coverage
  • Membership activities:- Work with part time membership officer to:- review and improve membership package and communications; encourage membership, sponsorship and naming uptake
  • Website – updating news stories on the website and liaising with
  • other departments on overall content.
  • Design work – liaising with other department to ensure high standard of design of leaflets, newsletters and interpretation. Some leaflet, flyer and poster production.
  • Co-ordinating distribution of brochures and other literature.
  • Internal communications -  organisation of staff events and other activities.
  • Handling photo-library      

 

Other Duties can include

  • Event organisation and attending events and talks
  • Fundraising initiatives
  • Assist in the HWDT visitor centre from time to time
  • Assist Project Officer in sourcing corporate sponsorship.
  • Market Research
  • General administrative tasks
  • Work with and oversee volunteers
  • Representing HWDT at certain meetings
  • Undertake other reasonable activities from time to time commensurate with HWDT objectives.

  • Sales skills
  • Creative flair
  • Experience of writing articles
  • Some design experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and team skills
  • Knowledge of marine environment
  • A flexible attitude and ability to work in small, busy offices as well as on own.
  • A driving licence is desirable
  • General administrative skills

General Information

Term of contract and probationary period:- This post will be from the date of appointment until 31 March 08 and is subject to 3 months probationary period.

Salary:- Payment will be £8 per hour for 3 days per week (22.5 hours - based on 7.5 hours day). The Trust offers a flexible working scheme, so that the work could be carried out over several days. Overtime is not paid but time off in-lieu is offered.

Location:- The job will be based in HWDT’s main office, 28 Main Street, Tobermory. A small amount of home working may be possible.

Annual Leave:-  Annual leave for the part time position is 15 holiday days and 5.5 for bank holidays.

Expenses:- Agreed travel, subsistence and other expenses arising from the project will be paid in arrears.
