The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust is looking for a Boat Manager to join our friendly team in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.
About the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust (HWDT): We work to ensure whales, dolphins and porpoises are protected and valued throughout the Hebrides. Each year our specialist research vessel Silurian travels thousands of nautical miles, training paying volunteers and monitoring Hebridean seas, to increase our understanding of Scotland’s cetaceans and the threats they face.
HWDT operates a busy programme of research and education trips around the Hebrides between April and October. The trips range from three day youth trips to 12-day scientific surveys. On each trip a team of six paying volunteers join HWDT onboard our research yacht, Silurian, to survey for whales and dolphins. Participants become part of the crew getting involved in all aspects of operating the vessel from cooking and cleaning to assisting with the sailing.
About the role: You will work closely with our Science and Community Engagement Teams to support our boat based programmes. You will manage the operations and maintenance for Silurian, the Trust’s 60ft research and education yacht and skipper the majority of survey trips.
Initially fixed term contract for 12 months, starting in early March 2017, with a possibility of extension. The post will require flexible working with out of hours and unsociable hours expected, for which time off in lieu will be granted. There will be no payment of overtime.
